For as much as I love salads . . . they tend to be the some of the worst culprits when eating out! I usually just ask if they can give me a salad that’s comprised of lots and lots of raw veggies, and top it with some protein (grilled chicken, salmon, shrimp . . . ). Then I ask for some balsamic vinegar to drizzle, or the dressing on the side which I dip my fork into, and it’s usually quite tasty!

I agree with you. Salads are often the worst option, which is mind-boggling! I like your idea of requesting your own kind of salad to reduce the add-ons.

Awww! What a lovely tribute to Flo by you and your colleagues! And no kidding, the stats for some restaurants are shocking. You THINK it seems like a healthy choice, but then look on line…yikes. And the sodium counts? Through the roof!!! Like you, if possible I look at menus and stats online before I go somewhere. I does help steer me in the right direction for healthier choices. Have a great day Lisa.

Oh yes! The sodium levels! Wowza. My soup may have been lower in calories than the salads, but the sodium levels were probably off the chart. It was super super salty.

I was tricked by my own assumptions. Everyone knows what happens when we assume. At the time I was counting calories and ordered creamy tomato basil soup, instead of the chunky chicken noodle. I thought I was being calorie smart. The restaurant didn’t have a calorie chart available. I got home, looked it up on the computer and just wow! About double the calories and fat. Another calorie learning experience.

That’s an excellent point, Marc. I’ve been tricked by my own assumptions too. “Oh this is TOTALLY one serving” um, it’s really not. Or “It’s tomato soup, how many calories can there really BE in it?!” Actually, a lot! “Bisque” is a fancy word for “uses lots of heavy cream.” LOL

What a nice way to remember Flo! 🙂

Ramen totally screwed me up. Seriously, one block of ramen is 2 servings? Who the heck eats half a block of ramen?

    1. Lisa Eirene

It’s been ages since I’ve had ramen. I’ll have to take a second look!

I don’t know i the cups are the same way but the squares are. I was eating it for ages before I realized I was only counting half the calories in it.

Man, I understand! I’ve made a similar mistake and I was so bummed out that I’d been off on my counts.

    I’m glad I don’t count calories 🙂
