Greyhounds ARE couch potatoes – super lazy, sweet and awesome! I’ve only ever met one full-size Greyhound out hiking though. On the other hand, we’ve had our Italian Greyhounds (also rescued) with us on hikes of up to 16 miles and 4000+ feet of gain with no problems. We take them running too, but I notice that they get tuckered out fast if they have to run on leash – they’re sprinters, so they prefer to run, stop and sniff, then run more; they don’t do as well with long, continuous running.

Runner’s World posted an overview of dog breeds for running: http://www.runnersworld.com/running-tips/breed-apart (the Vizslas I know are GREAT hiking and running dogs).

Thanks for the tips! I love Italian Greyhounds, too. I have a friend that has two and they are more like cats than dogs, but so cute! Great to know about the hiking and running with them. Does your Italian do well with other animals?

Some friends of mine had two greyhounds–Lucky (female) and Kagan (male). They were HUGE couch potatoes. And so sweet!! They used to lie on the floor during big parties and people would just have to step over them. It was very funny. They are both gone now but everyone who met them loved them.

They seemed like very chill dogs. It was cute.

We have a Catahoula-mix (the Catahoula breed is the result of Native Americans breeding molossers and greyhounds). We love her, but she is very very active.

The good thing is she is a great hiking and running dog (or so we have been told). She is a little too young to run long distances so we have started running a block and walking two. She should be all set in the next 3 months for longer distances.

As for hiking, she did great on a 3 mile hike when she was 4 1/2 months. Plus we walk her anywhere from 2 to 5 miles a day (because she needs it).

The rescue we got her from said she would be a great dog for an active couple (and I truly believe them). The one thing I would caution is that because she is a running/hiking dog, she has a lot of energy all the time.

I haven’t heard of that dog breed. Thanks for the tip! That kind of activity is kind of what we are looking for.

Our black lab was great at walks – if you just kept the leash short, like 6-8 inches, he would keep your pace no matter what. He loved trail hikes, until he was about 10 – I took him on a 2 mile walk, and he was so tired at the end that I had to carry him into the car – and he weighed 80 pounds!

We miss him this summer since he passed away – some of our favorite times were hanging out outside with him. 🙁

I’m sorry about your baby. 🙁 Labs are something we are considering as well.
