Great question from Beth, and a very insightful answer from you, Lisa. Like any other habit that can be taken to an extreme, the person has to be ready to take in the information. Do so before that point and it will just be shrugged off, maybe even strain the relationship. I was curious what Michael was feeling while you were going through this evolution? I know my husband thought I was nuts getting up in the morning before work to get in a run (which I still do, because it sets the tone for my day and I feel better, not because it “earns” me calories or “punishes” me for food I already consumed. When he started trying to drop some pounds, though, he was up in the morning with me, AND weighing himself daily. He’s since backed way off on that, but it was interesting to me to see him doing what he had given me grief for on occasion.

Thanks for the insight on this tricky topic!

I’ve been thinking about your question and how Michael felt during this time. I do remember that he would remind me to be more laid back with food, he was unhappy that I had a rigid/inflexible workout schedule. We had to plan stuff around my schedule. It definitely took a toll.

I think the most important thing is to shut off the diet talk and not accidentally reinforce. I think it is important to shut off a lot of topics immediately (gossip, bashing, politics, religion, inappropriate topics).
