It seems like summer has just started here in Portland. The weather is finally consistently nice enough to enjoy outdoor activities and I love it!<\/p>\n<p>I set the bar pretty low for July because I knew that I&#8217;d be really busy with a few vacations. How did I do for July?<\/p>\n<h4><strong>July Goals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>1. Commute to work by bike whenever I can. <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">YES!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>2. Practice getting in long rides on weekends. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Yes, most weekends did include bike rides.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. Incorporate more free weights in my workouts. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Yes, that&#8217;s part of my normal routine now.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. Enjoy the summer!<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em> Most definitely.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>5. Read more books (I already read like 3 a week but I\u2019m hungry for more!).\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>I&#8217;ve read some really great ones lately.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_8311.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21434\" title=\"IMG_8311\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_8311-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_8311-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_8311.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nJuly was a challenge for a lot of reasons. The biggest challenge was the food. Between birthdays, parties, out of town guests, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=21296\">festivals<\/a>, camping, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=21167\">road trips<\/a> and family reunions it was like everything revolved around food. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=20814\">Potlucks<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=20812\">BBQs<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=21160\">Brewfest<\/a>. I believe I made good choices, splurging on things that I <em>really<\/em> wanted&#8211; but within moderation. I don&#8217;t think I really went overboard on any of the food or drink choices I made other than the <em>frequency<\/em> of the indulgences.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/brewfest11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21454\" title=\"brewfest11\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/brewfest11-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/brewfest11-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/brewfest11.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSummer is a challenge time because of all these temptations. The weather is nice. I want to hang out with friends and family and food is always going to be the focus of those events. The biggest gift I can give myself each summer is the <strong>permission to enjoy it.<\/strong> That does NOT mean bingeing on everything in sight. That does not mean avoiding all the &#8220;fun food&#8221; and only eating the &#8220;diet&#8221; food. Fun food can be healthy too.<\/p>\n<p>So I balance the indulgences with the exercise choices I make. I go for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=21140\">long bike rides<\/a> and strenuous hikes that challenge my body. I challenge myself by swimming and lifting weights. And after I indulge (like at weekend trips and BBQs) I get right back on track when I get home. Back to &#8220;normal&#8221; eating. Like grilled chicken thighs and corn on the cob with butter and chili pepper:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9246.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21430\" title=\"IMG_9246\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9246-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9246-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9246-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOr how about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/?p=19202\">my absolute favorite steak dinner<\/a> with fresh zucchini from our garden:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9240.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-21424\" title=\"IMG_9240\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9240-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9240-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9240-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAll good meals! And they taste good without being high in calories.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>August Goals<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>1. Continue the Scale-Free Summer.<\/em> There have been a few times where I was tempted to weigh myself. Going scale-free was a struggle at first but sometime in July I seemed to find a comfortable oblivion to the scale. I stopped thinking about it all the time and stopped feeling anxious about whether or not I gained weight.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>2. Go on long bike rides training for the Portland Century.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><em>3. Relax more.<\/em> I tend to go-go-go and never really have any downtime. I want to enjoy my summer!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I think that&#8217;s doable.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>QUESTION: What is your biggest challenge in the summertime?
