Especially when eating out! When I eat out, I generally assume most of what I am eating is 2 servings. One trick is to ask for a &#8220;doggy bag&#8221; when your food is delivered. Immediately put half of the food in the box to have for lunch the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Another trick I do is to split an entree. One time, Michael and I went to one of our favorite restaurants for lunch, Papa Haydn&#8217;s in Sellwood. We got the Croque Monsieur (<\/span><i>Black forest ham or turkey on grilled parmesan coated bread with gruy\u00e9re and dijon)<\/i><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\"> and split the sandwich. We also ordered a caesar salad and split that. It was the perfect serving size for us!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">When eating processed food, pay attention to the labels. I found a nifty guide online (see above left). Sometimes there&#8217;s multiple servings in an item and you don&#8217;t even realize it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Here is a general guide on serving sizes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meat or Poultry (cooked)   <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Suggested portion: 3 &#8211; 4 oz.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Size guide: A deck of playing cards or a computer mouse<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fish (cooked) <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">3 &#8211; 4 oz. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A checkbook, or an eyeglass case<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Salad greens <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Two cupped handfuls<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Veggies (raw or cooked)  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1\/2 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Roughly the size of a baseball<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fresh fruit <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 medium piece<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A baseball<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bread  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 small slice<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A cassette tape<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pancakes and waffles<\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">2 small pancakes or waffles<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A compact disc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pasta   <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Your fist<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rice  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1\/2 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Cupcake wrapper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Potato  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A small potato, about 3 oz. (most restaurants serve 6 &#8211; 12 ounces of potatoes!)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A bar of soap<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dried cereal <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Your fist<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dried fruits and nuts <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 oz.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">An egg<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cheese  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 1\/2 oz.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A large eraser or 4 stacked dice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yogurt and milk <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">A fist<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ice cream <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1\/2 cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1\/2 a baseball, or a Clementine<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Chocolate  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 oz.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">Small package of dental floss<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Oil, mayonnaise, and butter  <\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">1 teaspoon*<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">The tip of your thumb<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:georgia;\">*Most people use far more butter and oil than the standard serving size, 1 teaspoon.
