The nurse who checked me in and took my blood pressure (121\/68) was a riot. When I made the appointment, they told me to wear shorts and tennis shoes. So that&#8217;s what I wore. She saw my shorts and started clapping and said &#8220;Thank you for wearing shorts!&#8221; I guess most people ignore that advice.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor I saw was also pretty hilarious. He had a great personality. He was friendly, he listened to my story, asked the right questions, and was just a plain nice guy. I knew the appointment was going to go well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7357\" title=\"doc1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc1-e1286573431824-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc1-e1286573431824-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc1-e1286573431824.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I told him about my training, how I cross-trained, what I&#8217;ve been doing since the injury (swimming and weights). I described Hood to Coast and my injury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7361\" title=\"doc2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc21-e1286573726721-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc21-e1286573726721-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc21-e1286573726721.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He had me do a bunch of tests to see how strong my hips, legs and IT Band were. He said that my right side wasn&#8217;t very strong. I also explained to him that I was told by my doctor to stop doing most activities for 6 weeks. He said that wouldn&#8217;t have been the advice he&#8217;d given me but oh well. I&#8217;m not upset because taking a break meant that I tried new things (like weight lifting).<\/p>\n<p>He turned to me and asked, &#8220;Do you want the good news or the bad news first?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My heart fell and I thought I might cry. There was bad news??<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;They&#8217;re the same thing, so don&#8217;t worry. <strong>The good news is you have IT Band Bursitis or <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/emedicine.medscape.com\/article\/307850-overview\"><strong>Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome.<\/strong><\/a><strong>.. The bad news is, you have IT Band Bursitis or Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome.&#8221; <\/strong>He said that I <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">will <\/span><\/strong>run again, but I need to strengthen my hips.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, which is a                           fluid-filled sac that provides a cushion between a bone                           and tissues, such as a ligament. I felt much better knowing WHAT was going on with my body, instead of just wondering if I was broken. He said that he could tell not running causes me anxiety and he said that I probably feel like I&#8217;m &#8220;broken.&#8221; So true! It was like he could read my mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/itband.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7363\" title=\"itband\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/itband-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/itband-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/itband.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He then showed me a bunch of different strengthening exercises I need to do 3 times a week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1.<a href=\"http:\/\/physicaltherapy.about.com\/od\/strengtheningexercises\/p\/Wallslides.htm\">Wall Slides<\/a>: Basically leaning against a wall and stand on one fit, then slowly lower and raise up and down. Hold it for 5 seconds before going back up. He said not to go all the way down either.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">2. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acefitness.org\/exerciselibrary\/38\/\">Sidelying Hip Abduction<\/a>: Laying on my side, I bend the underneath led and keep the top leg straight. Then raise and lower the top leg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/exercises2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7360\" title=\"exercises2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/exercises2-e1286573683387-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/exercises2-e1286573683387-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/exercises2-e1286573683387.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">3. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellsphere.com\/fitness-for-moms-article\/how-to-do-hip-hikes-with-pictures\/762414\">Hip Hikes<\/a>: Standing with one foot on a stair or a thick book, slowly lower the other foot to the floor. Today I was strangely sore in my lower extremities! Clearly those exercises work!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7365\" title=\"doc3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/doc3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">He wrote out a plan for me too. <span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>A Get Back to Running Plan!!!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/runplan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7366\" title=\"runplan\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/runplan-e1286574437232-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/runplan-e1286574437232-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/runplan-e1286574437232.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Plan<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Do <\/strong><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>three <\/strong><\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>days a week plus my other cross-training:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Week 1: <\/strong>walk 1 minute, jog 1 minute for a total of 1 mile a day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Week 2: <\/strong>walk 1 minute, jog 1 minute for a total of 1.5 miles a day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Week 3: <\/strong>jog 1.5 miles a day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Week 4: <\/strong>jog\/run 1.5 miles a day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Week 5: <\/strong>jog\/run 2 miles a day<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>&#8211;&gt;Add no more than 1 mile to each run after week 5, or 30% more total mileage each week.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am SO excited to have a plan! So for the next five weeks, I am going to continue what I&#8217;m currently doing. I will swim 2x a week, go to the gym and do weights 3 times a week&#8230;but instead of spending the full hour+ doing weights, I will start incorporating the short jog\/walk\/run schedule on the treadmill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>QUESTION: How do you strengthen your hips and legs?<\/em><\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday I had my appointment with the Sports Medicine doctor.
