It&#8217;s hands down the best breakfast in my opinion. As a kid we went out to breakfast as a family on weekends (my parents still do it to this day). We had a few favorite breakfast joints near the house that we&#8217;d rotate through each weekend. My favorite breakfast place we went to was in downtown Edmonds, just blocks away from the ferry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ferry1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25804\" title=\"ferry\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ferry1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ferry1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/ferry1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I would always order French toast. That was my favorite breakfast. The little pad of butter slowly melting as it&#8217;s nestled between the slices of toast&#8230;the warm syrup&#8230;the powdered sugar&#8230;heavenly!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2293.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25825\" title=\"IMG_2293\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2293-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2293-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2293-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I stopped eating French toast for a really long time. I just couldn&#8217;t justify the calories. I slowly started eating it again when I realized that French Toast wasn&#8217;t <em>that bad<\/em>. When Michael and I were first dating I got snowed in at his house one weekend and the snow just kept coming.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25806\" title=\"snow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>&#8220;Snowfall for Dec. 2008 totaled 18.9 inches. December also marked the second-snowiest month in Portland&#8217;s recorded history, bested only by the remarkable 41 inches of snow that fell on the Rose City in January, 1950.&#8221;<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d intended on only spending the night at Michael&#8217;s house and woke up to 18 inches that prevented me from making it home for 5 days! I think that was a turning point in our relationship, too, because we were forced to spend 5 days in close quarters without being able to leave. And with his roommate, Shoe. And we all survived. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25809\" title=\"snow2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/snow2.jpg 604w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Luckily we were within hiking distance of a nearby Safeway. \u00a0We trekked in the snow to get the ingredients. Michael and I started making this recipe for French Toast and we&#8217;ve never done it another way since.\u00a0Of course it&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthastewart.com\/316629\/perfect-french-toast\">Martha recipe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2281.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25813\" title=\"IMG_2281\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2281-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2281-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2281-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Perfect French Toast<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Serves 6<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ingredients<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6 large eggs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1 1\/2 cups milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Juice of 1 medium orange, (or orange juice, about 1\/4 cup)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">2 tablespoons cognac, (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1 tablespoon sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Zest of 1 lemon, (about 1 tablespoon)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">1\/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pinch of salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">6 slices bread, such as brioche, sliced 1-inch thick, preferably day-old<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4 tablespoons unsalted butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">4 tablespoons vegetable oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Pure maple syrup, (optional)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Directions<\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Whisk together eggs, milk, juice, vanilla, cognac, sugar, zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a bowl; set aside.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Place bread in a shallow baking dish large enough to hold bread slices in a single layer. Pour egg mixture over bread; soak 10 minutes. Turn slices over; soak 10 minutes more or until soaked through.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet, and set aside. Heat 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry half the bread slices until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer to wire rack; place in oven while cooking remaining bread. Wipe skillet, and repeat with remaining butter, oil, and bread. Keep in oven until ready to serve. Serve warm with maple syrup, if desired.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The secret that makes this recipe so amazing is the orange juice and lemon zest. It&#8217;s been over a year since we&#8217;ve made it. I think the last time we made it was for my parents for breakfast when they visited last summer. It was time to make it.<\/p>\n<p>We mixed the wet ingredients in a jug with a lid and then shake it up to mix it. \u00a0I put the bread slices into a dish and then pour the liquid into the dish for the bread to soak it up.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2285.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25817\" title=\"IMG_2285\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2285-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2285-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2285-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I flip the bread a few times until it&#8217;s all the way soaked and then Michael cooked them in the skillet until they were golden brown.\u00a0Michael also made some bacon to go with out French toast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2288.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-25820\" title=\"IMG_2288\" src=\"http:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2288-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2288-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.110pounds.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/IMG_2288-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I sprinkled a little bit of powdered sugar on top of the toast. I grabbed Texas Toast this time because it was thicker and the store I went to didn&#8217;t have Brioche (but that is preferred). This recipe is pretty fantastic and don&#8217;t get discouraged by how involved it might be. \u00a0It&#8217;s more involved than a simple French toast recipe but this one is so much better than anything I&#8217;ve ever had.
