back pain

That Time of Year

Well I’m not at all surprised that with all that traveling we just did that I got a cold! Thankfully I don’t think it’s the flu (I never had a fever) but I felt pretty crappy last week and basically all weekend. πŸ™

I was home Thursday and Friday and either on the couch or in bed. Drinking gallons of theraflu, emergenC, taking ColdEze and elderberry cough drops. Yuck! The good news is that I got to catch up on some TV shows snuggling with the fur babies on the couch.

I watched Pandemic on Netflix (very good) and started Locke and Key (also pretty good, with a twist of fantasy and mild horror). And I got caught up on my favorite TV shows I’m behind on (Schitt’s Creek, Grey’s Anatomy, and SVU). Lots of napping. Lots of laziness.

I was sick for Valentine’s Day. Bummer. But Michael brought home pho (my favorite when I have a cold) and some keto ice cream!

Not really doing keto right now while I’m sick but trying to do low carb at the very least. The pho hit the spot! The ice cream was a little weird in texture but I’ll try it again. πŸ™‚

Logan got me a super sweet card:

Michael also got some keto bread at Costco!

Saturday night I had a grilled ham and cheese sandwich on the bread. It was pretty decent. It itched the craving for a sandwich! The bread was pretty good. The first half was good but the second half got a little soggy and the bread started falling apart a bit. Maybe using the keto bread for just grilled cheese, no ham, would be better.

Sunday morning I had eggs and avocado toast with the keto bread. The keto bread was great as toast!

Sunday I also went to the doctor. I was feeling a lot worse and it was turning into a sinus infection. Antibiotics and prednisone for a few days. BOO. My surgery last year definitely fixed my issues, though. Instead of 7 or 8 sinus infections a year, one is definitely an improvement!

Also, once I’m feeling better I need to get back to weight lifting. I notice that when that falls off I start having issues with my back and stuff. My SI joint has been bugging me for weeks and my hip and back feel terrible. Probably because all I’ve done for a month is cardio (swimming, running, hiking etc). I need to get back to strength training asap!

As for losing weight…I managed to NOT gain any weight in Hawaii! Yay! I did a mostly on plan diet (low carb, not necessarily keto) with splurges every day (like rice with my poke and then birthday cake) but I didn’t go crazy and we were super active. So that was nice. I did manage to gain 2 pounds in LA, of course. LOL How does that happen?!? Who even knows. But as soon as this cold is over with I am back to the diet, back to the gym!

I started doing Keto last February 1st and have done it in fits and starts, which isn’t ideal and not effective. Stuff kept popping up (my surgery, the stress of buying a house and moving and then the holidays) so I basically kept gaining and losing THE SAME 10 pounds since last year. I am really hoping I can do better this year.

Be My Valentine

I thought I’d give a bit of an update…we’ve been…busy this past week!

First, I have to say: Friends are amazing! Last week a dear friend seemed to just know we were struggling and needed help and offered to drop off dinner. She picked up amazing pizza and salad and it was SO nice of her!! Michael was basically bed-ridden at that point.

The pizza was great and we had leftovers for several meals.

I’ve been trying to do everything and taking care of Logan, the animals and Michael. And working. And doing house chores and trying to still work out. It’s a lot. I feel like I’m not doing any of it very well right now. The meal was very nice and helpful and made me feel some relief.

Michael’s mom brought us ham and bean soup (delicious)! (And over the weekend she came to babysit and brought us a casserole.)

In better news, Logan got his first Valentine! πŸ˜‰

A card made by his BFF Winnie and some stickers! So cute! Another friend dropped of chocolates and a balloon! Logan is popular. πŸ˜‰ He had a Valentine’s party at daycare and that looked like fun. Plus, mommy and daddy got a valentine from Logan!

Michael and I had leftovers for dinner on Valentine’s Day. Then…his back went completely out. He couldn’t walk or stand or lay. He ended up going to the ER. At least I can cross off “hot firemen in my bedroom on valentine’s day” from my bucket list…?? πŸ˜‰ Made me think of that Friend’s episode.

Family came over to be with Logan and I went to the ER with Michael. He ended up getting an MRI (thankfully) and he has a herniated disk. I stayed late at the ER until he was going in for the MRI. It was going to be several hours for it and I had to get home for Logan.

I was in bed by midnight and got a few hours of sleep. I got Logan up and to daycare, went to work for a few hours, then left and went to the hospital. They aren’t doing surgery immediately. The heavy-duty meds Michael got in the hospital seemed to help a lot and relax whatever was going on and pinching the nerves. So after spending almost 24 hours in the hospital, he got to come home!

And he got to hold Logan for the first time in 6 weeks! We were all happy. <3

My cousin Anna hired some babysitting to help me out. A friend of Michael’s picked him up from the hospital because I had to go pick up Logan. It was SO nice how many people stepped up to help out. We have the best friends and family.

He’s doing better. He has a lot of follow-up appointments (Neurosurgeon, PT, spine clinic, his regular doc, I don’t even know what else). I hope we get some good answers for treatment. I really dislike that doctors just want to “manage” stuff like this with pain pills. That DOESN’T FIX the problem. And with a lot of people, it causes more problems. Neither Michael nor I are really pill people so we’re both determined to find another answer to fix this.

So it’s been an overwhelming, stressful week! Sheesh.
