I’ve been reading memoirs lately.. I laughed non stop at Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. Loved the 50’s flashback in Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid by Bill Bryson. I was not the biggest fan of Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris. Right now I’m reading the newest Sookie Stackhouse novel which is a guilty pleasure of mine! I’m a big reader so I always love reading about other books people are enjoying!

Thanks for the recommendations. That first one sounds right up my alley.

Re: Battle Royale – it’s based on a book, which came out well before the Hunger Games. For what it’s worth, I LOVED the book – haven’t seen the movie, but have heard from people that the movie sucks. The book though? Amazing.

I know Hunger Games was second, but how did she not get sued for ripping off Battle Royale?

Weeeeell, you know, literature has a long and proud tradition of sharing… and they both were inspired by Lord of the Flies, right? Must have been! But yeah, people seem to sue at the drop of a hat these days, surprising no lawsuits!

Oh yes, Lord of Flies is evident in a LOT of books I read!

I really, really enjoyed the Harold Fry book. It was so sweet at its heart!

I liked the Divergent series as well, although the romance was a tad annoying in it. They are making a movie of that now.

I just finished a book called The Golem and The Jinni – so good!

I hear that from a few people who read Divergent. I honestly don’t remember being annoyed with it at all.

The best books I’ve read so far this summer: The Interestings (teens meet at summer camp in the 1980s; how their lives turn out) and Alias Grace (YA novel set in WWII, focusing on the friendship of two young women who wouldn’t have met if not for the war – the first third is slow but WOW it is so worth hanging in for the pace to pick up). I’m also finally reading some MFK Fisher (Gastronomical Me) and it’s really terrific writing.

I’m going to look into several of the books you listed!

Plots can’t be copyrighted; it’s only plagiarism if an author lifts the text from another. Just think how many vampire/zombie/romance/action/mystery books and movies exist – described superficially they have similarities, but it’s in the creative development of the characters and story that the differences appear.

Thanks for the recommendations. Will look those up!

And thanks for the FYI on copyrights. I was so curious.

I feel like you wrote this post for me. I think I love dystopian books because of that morbid curiosity I have with “what if” scenarios. Definitely adding your suggestions to my list!

I love the “What if” too. I like to think about what I would do…

It’s sad, I haven’t read a book in years! I think I need to change that – but there are too many blogs to read! 😀
