Glad to hear your GD is under control, Lisa – and what a blessing to get hooked up with a good nutritionist!! It’s so frustrating when you’re facing something new and scary medically, and your caregiver(s) don’t lead with “I know it sounds scary, but here’s how we’re going to manage it”. Words matter, people!! Hang in there – baby girl is just around the corner 🙂

Thank you! Yes, words matter. And my doctor actually called me yesterday to apologize for the lack of bedside manner from (several) health care workers that I’ve dealt with in the past week.

I had that long test, with one of my pregnancies, I remember it well. It was negative, and then I never had it again. So that might mean it was my last baby (I was 37).

I don’t think I had anyone comment on my age with that pregnancy. (I live in an area with lots of very big families. My backdoor neighbor has 7 kids from 12-1 for example. She is in her 40’s.)

But three years later, then age 40, we were having a wooden swing set delivered. And standing in the back yard the Amish guys thought I was holding my three year old grand daughter. I asked how old they thought I was. And they guessed correctly. When you are Amish, you likely do have grandkids at 40. So, I was not offended.

And sitting at gymnastics with that same child, a couple years later, I realized if I had a baby right out of high school, that child would be the same age as the other (young) mothers in the stands watching class. That was a little mind blowing.

Thank you for that story! Michael and I both felt similarly after Logan started school and realized that so many of the parents were younger than us. Logan’s teacher is pretty young too, probably late 20s. It’s a weird thing to think about.

I remember when I was a kid and I had the “older mom”. My mom was 28 when she had me, which isn’t that “old” but it was for the 70s and 80s. She also turned gray as a teenager (as I did too!) and didn’t really dye her hair until she was in her 40s. So when I was little, people often thought she was my grandma.

Congratulations for your upcoming baby girl! So exciting. Sorry you have to deal with GD before she arrives though. That sounds very stressful – though I’m glad you found some good advice.

I was 40 when I had my second and I feel lucky that my doctor’s didn’t make a big deal about it. Though I took advantage of all the ultrasounds and stress tests the insurance paid for in the last few weeks. It really put my mind at ease because I was a little worried about the increased risks. And I have to admit, I didn’t mind sitting in the room at the doctor’s just relaxing for a while each week not at work and not taking care of my son (who was 4 at the time).

Thank you Bea! I appreciate your story. Thankfully my doctor reassured me a bit and said the “struggle” of pregnancy due to age has already passed for me (i.e. the challenge of actually getting pregnant, staying pregnant and passing the genetic testing stage).
