Do you think maybe your stride was different because you were running with someone else? I hope your hip feels better. Try to swim, maybe it will loosen it up a bit.

I wish I had some answers for you, but I don’t. I think immediate rest is in order and then just play it by ear next week?

NO HEAT! Whenever you injure something heat only causes it to swell within the first 72 hours! ICE ICE ICE! If you can 20 minutes on/40 minutes off for the first 72 hours. Then heat if the injury is feeling better. But if it is still hurting stick with the ice!!! I wish I had seen this sooner!

I am sorry to hear that your hip is still playing up. Here’s hoping after a few days rest it will settle down šŸ™

Ohh I know that sucks! Seriously YOGA and stretching helps me when I have hip pain. Pigeon pose is the best hip opener EVER. If you feel too sore to do it, don’t push it, but I’d definitely look into yoga if you haven’t already. It has helped me a lot.

I’ve always had knee problems due to the structure of my legs, but I know a lot of women have hip problems. I think a hip problem is one of those things that occur due to muscle imbalance and not enough stretching. I would honestly take it easy (i.e. not run) until it clears up. Maybe some NSAIDS and lots of ice (and I agree with Kelly, no heat!). Icy Hot actually only sends a signal (hot/cold) that goes faster than pain neurons, so you feel the temperature rather than the pain… so it doesn’t actually help fix the problem, just sort of numbs the pain in a funny way.
If it doesn’t clear up in a couple of days, I would definitely go to a physiotherapist just to see if your muscles are balanced and what sort of exercises and stretches you can do to help even things out. Because females have larger hips, we use our leg muscles fairly unevenly, and there tends to be inflammation where muscles/tendons attach at the bum/hip area.

    (long enough reply hey?)

I haven’t had hip pain from running but I have had on and off hip pain from poor walking stride (that and snow shoveling where I did pull a muscle or something) Have you had your stride analyzed? After my various injuries of late, it seems to keep coming back to either my insanely tight calf muscles or some poor misalignment with my stride.
Good luck, and I agree – if it’s not clearing up with rest/ice/elevation – then get thee to a doctor and/or physio.

I found a couple of articles on hip pain at runnersworld.com – my go-to for any running problems I’m having! http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-285–11807-0,00.html and http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-369-370-377-12182-0,00.html

My fat kitty is intrigued by the bath too! She fell in once trying to get a closer look and was under the bed for the rest of the day trying to lick herself dry.

Thanks for the articles. I took two days off from working out and I’m going to take it easy for a few days, do some yoga and stretching.
