I went to Crater Lake in 1986 in July with my aunt because my cousin had a summer job there and my aunt had never been (they lived in Oregon). She’d made reservations for us to stay in the lodge and when making them she was asked if we wanted a room with a bathroom or not (!!). So, she shared that information with me before we made our journey there and we were curious what we were in for. It was a wonderful trip with memories made! The walls in the rooms were paper thin so that we could hear the man next door snoring and the bathroom we got had a claw foot tub, no shower. Also, there was no TV, no radio and no phone in the room but it’s fairly remote so you wouldn’t have been able to pick up TV or radio signal there anyways. We ate in the restaurant – the food was delicious. We hiked down the trail to the lake and went on the boat ride. The walk back up was not as pleasant as the walk down.

They had staff housing that my cousin lived in which turned out to be similar to a college dorm and was newer and nicer than the rooms in the hotel (at the time).

The inn closed after that season for a major renovation that took several years. It is a grand lodge that provides you a place to stay but doesn’t detract from what you are at Crater Lake for, and that is to experience the lake and the land around it. The dining room had fabulous views and there was a large fireplace, but the rooms were just a place to rest after a day of hiking and enjoying the lake. I hope to make it back there one day!

You put into words what I experienced also – the bluest water that was beautiful, indescribable in color, and smooth as glass. I hope you get to go back and suspect that you and Michael would enjoy staying in the hotel and doing more hiking.

Thank you so much for the details of your visit! It’s great to hear experiences and I would definitely like to go back and try staying at the lodge.

The “European” style lodging is not my favorite. The McMenamin’s hotels are like that. Shared dorm-style bathrooms and only a sink in the individual rooms. I’m not really a fan of that style, but I’d be willing to give it a try at the Crater Lake lodge for a few days, just for the experience and the views.

I REALLY wish we could have done the hike down to the lake for the boat tour. I bet it was amazing. Someday!

How beautiful! Do you find that sometimes it is almost painful to look at really amazing places in nature because it’s overwhelming? I am like that.

    1. Lisa Eirene

Yes! It was very overwhelming. The part about me feeling very small and humbled…totally true. It was just so beautiful my brain just couldn’t handle it. It really wasn’t like the photos. So different to see it in person.
