John went vegetarian and his iron levels started to drop – odd for a man, too. Anyway, he eats more eggs with the yolks and cooks a lot of his foods in a cast iron skillet. That actually will help transfer minute bits of iron to you. Anything that can be cooked in skillet we try to do in the cast iron pan. He started taking a multivitamin and now his levels have gone back up. I still can’t get him to eat the broccoli, though!

Interesting! We have cast iron. I can try that. I eat eggs most mornings! I wish what I was doing was helping.

I was an extremely iron deficient about 4 years ago. I didn’t know it and was training for my first 5k. I thought the lack of energy was from restricting calories but in retrospect some of it came from being anemic. I ate lots of the foods mentioned but I had to stay on iron for about 3 years and so my advice is not how to cure it but if you must take it, it will make you constipated. To help with that, I found a slow release iron called Slow Fe. It made all the difference in the world. Ask your doctor. Then get it!

Thanks for the tip! I will check out my iron supplement and see if it’s slow release. If not, I’m almost out so I will buy that kind next. It’s worth a try. What I find baffling is how I could still be anemic despite taking supplements!

I am glad you are addressing your anemia – left unchecked it causes a whole host of problems – one of my dear blog friends Janine ended up passing away from heart failure due to being anemic for years and not knowing.

One interesting thing, I had no idea that cooking with a cast iron skillet would add iron to your food?! Learn something new every day.

    Hugs!

I’m so sorry to hear about your friend. That’s awful. 🙁

I swore by my blackstrap molasses oatmeal and kale chip omelettes during pregnancy, on top of a regular multivitamin (the prenatal one made me very sick). I did it postpartum too, to help regain my supplies. It’s pretty crazy how much your micronutrient intake needs to increase to grow a human!

So do you make molasses oatmeal cookies or something else?

I just added a serving of molasses to my oatmeal in the morning then added my standard fruit serving. I have a granola recipe that uses it as well.

Thanks for the tip! I will see if my grocery store has it

Have you thought of increasing your portion sizes of the iron rich foods? Maybe you are eating too little every day?

    1. Lisa Eirene

That’s actually a really good idea. I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks!
