I agree with you about not having trigger foods around & having handy snacks. If I have good snacks in my desk at work, I won’t crave the items coworkers bring in or run to the vending machine. And at home, if I have cheese around (block cheese), it will be eaten too quickly. So I just avoid buying it & use cheese (a trigger food for me) as an accent. Actually, luckily, I’ve been using it less & less on things that I thought I needed it on (tacos, chili). So that’s one thing I avoid keeping at home. Thanks for this post! I like to see what other people buy as “staples.”

Have you thought about individually wrapped string cheese?

I’m curious to see what other people’s staples are too. Lately I’ve had Halloween candy in my house and I’ve been eating way too much of it. I can’t wait for it to be GONE.

We ALWAYS have apples, pistachios, salad greens, beans and frozen berries! I think I’d panic if I ran out of any of these items. 🙂

      Oooh pistachios! Good idea!

Great post, Lisa. I agree with you, if it isn’t in the house, I (usually) don’t think about it. I’ve been doing better again about planning our menu for the week and keeping lots of fruit and veggies around for snacking. I also clean, cut and put fruit and veggies in containers as soon as I can after I buy it. If its just as easy to grab a handful of grapes as it is something else, I’ll usually make the smart choice. I always have garbanzo beans in the pantry for a snack and tilapia in the freezer for a quick meal.

That’s a fantastic idea! I think spending a little bit of time to pre-cut everything and make it easy to grab is better. What do you do with the garbanzo beans for snacks? Roast them?

Nice list! I always keep canned beans, quinoa, oatmeal, and a few frozen Indian dishes from Trader Joes. Always works in a pinch!

Funny, I just got some of the Trader Joe’s indian dinners for lunches. They are so good. 🙂

I keep apple, bananas, berries, chicken, shrimp, mini peppers and cherry tomatoes!

Shrimp are almost always in our freezer! Such a good, healthy, fast meal when you don’t have time to make dinner.

Things I always have on hand: frozen broccoli florets, eggs, cans of pumpkin (year round), nut butters, either dates or dried pineapple. I love dates with a bit of nut butter on them for a sweet and salty snack. Yum! It’s very hard for me to overeat dates or dried pineapple, so those are perfect for me to have in the house for sweets.

Yes! It is hard for me to overeat the dried apricots I get from Costco and use as post-workout snacks. I can only eat about 4-5 of them. They satisfy the hunger until I can eat a meal.

Love this post! When I started eating more healthfully, it hit me… I love tomatoes SO MUCH… Why don’t I have them on hand at all times?! I didn’t have an answer to that… so now I always do… I also agree that not having trigger foods in the house is a big deal. For me, that’s ice cream or cheese and crackers… way too easy to binge! However, I do try to keep those mini babybel cheeses (get a big bag from Costco) on hand and I can get my cheese satisfaction without eating a half a brick. 😉 Thanks for sharing these tips.

I agree on the ice cream! I only have it in my freezer on occasion. Great tip on the cheese!
