You need a canning funnel. It’s a wide mouthed funnel that sits just inside the jar so you can ladle and it doesn’t get the rim of the jar messy.

Yes! After this first very messy attempt, I got a kit. It came with a funnel for the cans, tongs and a few other things. I’m excited to try it!

Ha, I was just typing the same advice about the funnel! I use jars to store food and use the funnel constantly. That looks delicious!

It’s never clear to me why tomatoes need peeling. When I’m making spaghetti sauce I don’t bother and no one’s stopped eating because of peel issues!

I’ve made some tomato sauce from scratch and didn’t remove the skin either. I didn’t notice a huge difference either.

The funnel and the jar picker-upper are essential for canning! I like to can Apple Butter that I make in the crock pot. I’ve also canned marinara sauce and jellies.
Salsa is one thing that I would like to make but haven’t. Unfortunately our tomato plants aren’t as productive as I’d hoped, so if I made salsa I’d be forced to use canned tomatoes.

Last year our tomatoes were pathetic. This year they are doing pretty good.

I actually have never “cooked” my salsa. I just process it in my food processor, pour it into the jars and can it then – I just bought 50 tomatoes on my $1 rack at the store – 5 packages of 10 tomatoes each – so $5! Sadly, my gas grill died, so if it’s not raining tonight, I need to pull out the Weber to grill up the tomatoes.

Great job though! There is nothing like opening up a can of salsa in December!

Sadly there won’t be any in December at this rate. We’re already half way through the jars. LOL Michael loves it. I will be making more soon!
