    Awesome! Are you gradually seeing the results you want? I need to read your weights post. Does your HRM accurately track calories burned while lifting too?

      I have nothing to compare the HRM to in terms of lifting weights but one thing I did notice when I started lifting was that my heart rate was surprisingly high! I used to be a cardio junkie and scoffed at weight lifting for weight loss because I never had a number I could SEE, you know? Seeing m heart rate at 150 when I lift weights showed me pretty quickly that it was an activity I could grow to love!

    I worked out for 2 1/2 hours today. So fun with a buddy! Thirty minutes of intervals on the elliptical, then 1.5 hours of shoulders, triceps and abs. I don’t usually do cardio on the same day, but it worked out b/c I had a shake before weights. The rest of the day I spent going through my emails and laundry (and twitter). Fun fun!

      It’s nice working out with a friend! Do you know how many calories you burned in that time? That’s a long time to be in the gym. I think I would need a snack after 1.5 hours.

    This is a really good thing to remember, that I still struggle with:

    “I’d rather be able to run 3 miles with zero pain than run 3.25 and not be able to run for a week.”

    I started my Saturday with a good TM workout

    and then spent 7 hours at my sons’ wrestling tournament!

      Isn’t it a simple thing to tell ourselves though? Yet I forget it too and push myself too far.

    OK, I need a heart rate monitor! I leave the gym having no idea how many calories I’ve burned… at all. I don’t even really pay attention to the treadmill/elliptical because I’ve heard they are bad estimators. But that’s not a very effective way to work out!

    I spent my Saturday on the couch — sick. And it looks like I’ll be spending my Sunday the same way! But it’s kind of nice to slow down…

      Sorry you’re sick! Bummer it’s on a weekend too.

      If someone asked me what 2 things they should spend money on when starting a workout routine I’d say:
      1. heart rate monitor
      2. Properly fitted running shoes.
      Nothing else really matters!

    About the HRM, you wear a band around your chest to monitor your heart rate every time you exercise? If the calories burned are different, have you found through your eating habits that the HRM is closer to being correct (ie, perhaps you weren’t eating enough and you gained weight because you were exercising harder than you thought)?
    I got a HRM for Christmas but haven’t taken the time to do the set-up stuff yet. Not that it’s too difficult, it’s just a mental thing that I think it will take too long and my kids will interrupt me. After reading this post you’ve made me want to start using it!

    It really is hard when you are injured not to compare to the past. I still do it because there are some things that just have never come back after 10 months! My run speed is still slower than it used to be, and longer running causes a back ache and numbness in my leg. You just have to accept it and work with what you have.

    It’s great that you are able to do all that you can now, even if the running isn’t what it used to be.

      And at least I can do what I can…I’d be in worse shape mentally if I couldn’t do any activities. So I’m happy with that.

    I’m a total slacker, Lisa.
    Thanks for the shout out! I so appreciate it.
    I almost started crying again when I talked to my mentor the other day, but it was tears of joy and excitement to get so much feedback from people who’ve “been there”. It’s so touching!

    After a couple of hours editing my photos, I realized it wasn’t so bad. I think it was just the initial shock of being so exposed.
    But what it has done for me is made me wake up, if you will, to what I need to do, and that I was a bit behind in my thinking. I really thought I was more secure than I am…. but for every lesson, there’s a beginning!
    Thanks for being supportive and someone I can count on to “know” what I’m thinking! 🙂
