oooooh scary! I had a similarly stressful snowshoeing experience one time – thinking back, we really really should have just turned around, as we were snowshoeing in snow that was 6 feet deep and mostly unbroken. Did you ever think of just turning around and retracing your steps, or were you too disoriented by then?

I’m good at navigating in civilization, if I’m paying attention.

Your lost appetite reminds me of when I first got into biking and got talked into biking to work – 11 miles! – I had NO appetite post-ride and was half-convinced my body thought it was dying and had shut down my metabolism ๐Ÿ™‚

Hahahaha! Maybe my body thought it was dying too. LOL

We talked about turning around but decided against it. It felt like we were SO CLOSE to the top that it felt dumb to turn around and double the miles to get back. Had we not found the trail again we would have turned around.

Am I good at navigating? In one word – yes. As a Boy Scout I got my orienteering merit badge and used to go off on my own and practice. Then I was in college ROTC for awhile and took a couple orienteering classes. I used to do deep woods backpacking where you hike two days in and two days out and topographic maps are very useful. But the most fun I had was when I lived in Germany and was out with my kids on a nature hike in the forest. About a dozen active duty U.S. Army Soldiers (patrol) were out in the woods and the person in charge was a young 2nd Lieutenant. He asked me if I knew where we were at. I said yes. He then asked if I could show him on his map. So I did and he disagreed. I pointed out to him that he was reading the map upside down and that to return to Landstuhl they needed to go in the opposite direction. At which point the enlisted guys all moaned and exhaled in frustration at their patrol leader. I guess their 2 hour adventure turned into an 6 hour day by the time they got back.

I know I should laugh but your story about the Lieutenant made me chuckle!

That’s cool that you are so good at navigating. I’d love to take an orienteering class. I never did Girl Scouts or anything as a kid (except for one year as a Brownie) and didn’t learn that kind of stuff. I just learned it from experience. My family was big on hiking, backpacking and camping so I learned to look for landmarks and remember the path we came from.

I am super excited about you recreating that dish at home, too! Can’t wait to read about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sheesh! What crazy weird luck you’re having! At least you’ve got a good story to share ๐Ÿ˜‰ I have a terrible sense of direction! I get lost in malls… I kid you not. I even got lost in my future in-law’s gated community that has 3 roads. It’s sad. So I know that panicky feeling very well! Thankfully smartphones have helped me in some situations but mostly I just end up walking more than originally anticipated *sigh* Hope the rest of your trip goes a little better!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hahaha! You poor thing. ๐Ÿ™‚ Unfortunately, out in the woods the smartphones don’t always work. SOMETIMES they do but not often.

That looks like such a great time! And BEAUTIFUL! And isn’t it funny when your appetite decides to be weird? But the wine social sounded fun. ๐Ÿ™‚

Again, awesome pictures. All in all, it sounds like it was a great trip. Since you made it back home safely and in one piece, the near death experiences will just make the trip more memorable and story worthy.

    Thanks for sharing your tale.

    Cheers!
