One of my good friends has a dwarf Boston Terrier, and he’s adorable and SUPER energetic. He’s 5+ years old but he’s the size of an older puppy. I think it’s a great breed!

“Super energetic” sounds exhausting!!! LOL We want a breed we can take hiking and that I can run with, but not a crazy dog that never sits still…

I think if you get a puppy you can train them. My friend got Buddy when he was 5, so he wasn’t really behaviorally trained as a puppy.

We are undecided on puppy or older dog. I think a puppy is more work, but we can train from the beginning AND raise the dog to be good with my cats. But we’ll probably get a dog from the Humane Society, so who knows what we get.

We had a Boston Terrier when I was growing up and she was a great, great dog (RIP Pumpkin). She was really energetic and fun to have around. However, you might want to think about another breed if you really do want to run with your dog. Boston Terriers can have serious respiratory issues because of that squishy face and short nose (similar to the problems bulldogs and pugs have). There can be a lot of wheezing, coughing, and drooling. Our dog would overheat quickly and throw up if she overexerted herself so we had to keep that under control. She loved to walk, but I don’t think I would have ever tried to run with her or take her on a strenuous hike. I would at least talk to a vet before I got a puppy….

Love your blog, by the way!

Hi Ginger–thanks for reading and commenting! Pumpkin is a great name for a dog! Thanks for the information on Bostons and running. Honestly, after spending a few hours around Lola’s super high energy ways, I am not quite as certain about that breed. I think I’m leaning back towards a black lab.

I have nothing constructive to add, other than – OMG I wanna puppy!

I have 5 cats, so the puppy thing isn’t going to happen any time soon.

I know! SO CUTE!!! I am hoping that the puppy gets along with my cats. That’s a must. I’m sure there will be a transitional time, but to be honest my cats are #1 so if it doesn’t work out, the puppy won’t work for us.
